Designing a golf course around pre-existing polo fields and a race track was such a frustrating experience for Charles Blair Macdonald that he turned the assignment over to Seth Raynor. Piping Rock the 18-hole private course opened in 1912 and was extended by 400 yards by Pete Dye in the 1980s.
The club house was designed by Guy Lowell. Considered by many to be one of the best places to play in the country, today’s course measures 6,723 yards from its longest tees and has a par value of 71. The rating is 73.0 and the slope is 134. The greens are slippery and sloping and the wind is always a factor here.
There are two approaches that require blind shots and using the iron accurately is really important. The front nine holes are spacious and comfortable while the back nine are much tighter. Patrons also enjoy the driving range, grass and clay tennis courts, beach front, pool and excellent dining facilities.
